Poem by the Dutch writer
C.O. Jellema

DE VITA BEATA

‘In life, brother Gallio, everyone would be happy,
yet blind are they to what would
make life so.’ When though this morning,
after a thundery shower, Seneca,
a frog made leaps across the wet
vastness of the lawn, so clearly
blissful in my eyes, it was as if
with his slick body I could feel –
what else is happiness; had I not
seen it, how would I know it as such –
so in his element, so unaware
those lovely arches of his leaps across the grass.
