A poem by the Dutch poet Hanny Michaelis

Amongst the other trees,
luxuriant green colossi,
that one, scantier of bud each year
and now merely a finely ramified
skeleton, frail enlargement
of a leaf in autumn
wasted down to the very nerve.

A caricature of Goethe’s
green-golden tree of life,
but closer to the truth.
