Knud Sørensen: 'Altings forklaring'

THE EXPLANATION OF EVERYTHING

This is how he is sitting:

With his back against an age-old tree-trunk

his face in its shade and eyes

fixed on a green apple

which hundreds of years ago

loosened from its branch but still

hesitates, still

hovers somewhere outside time.

Newton also hesitates, sees

that the apple's layer of wax quivers

but perhaps

it is only his eyes

for he's been staring so long

perhaps it is only his consciousness

for he's been holding his breath so long

has abandoned himself to his hesitancy

fallen in love with this eternal instant.

Then he closes his eyes

does not see

that the apple rises towards the blue sky.

He says:

The apple falls to the ground.
