Grauwgrijze schapenkudden trekken
de wadden langs. – Een hekatombe
van koeien staat half in het water.
De damp slaat van de wieren af.
Verder landinwaarts naderen grazend,
staartzwaaiende, de grote paarden,
zó langzaam dat volmaakt archaïsch
dit trage kleien onland wordt.
Ebb tide
Drab greyish flocks of sheep are moving
along the mudflats. A hecatomb of
cows is standing half in the water.
Steam’s coming off the laid-bare kelp.
Further inland the large horses, grazing,
swishing their tails, are approaching,
so slowly that these sluggish, claggy
marshes grow wholly archaic.
