Detail from an anonymous print of figures in the Oude Doolhof (Old Labyrinth) in Amsterdam, c. 1831–54

Make sure to always bear in mind

Trust in your own strength’s not confined:

A giant, well-muscled, strong of bone

Succumbed to David’s well-slung stone.

The name ’Chinese’ may cause distaste,

Though, children!’ you have homes well-spaced,

Of stone and plaster, warm inside,

While with his tent he’s satisfied.

Although equipped with padlocks strong,

This miser’s restless all day long;

With hand and body guards his chest

Though no one would his wealth contest.
