Johan Olof Wallin: 'Jordens oro viker'

Jordens oro viker

för den frid som varar.

Graven allt förliker.

Himlen allt förklarar.

Earth’s unrest dissolving,

lasting peace draws nearer.

Grave’s calm’s all-resolving.

Heaven all makes clearer.

The poem was published for the first time in 1847 in Samlade Vitterhetsarbeten av Johan Olof Wallin (I, p. 153)

Grafskrift.*

Jordens Oro Wiker

För den frid, som varar:

Grafven allt förliker,

Himlen allt förklarar.

* This inscription, the initial letters of the three words in the first line being those of Wallin’s own name, was found among his papers and has been placed as an inscription on his grave.

In actual fact, on the inside of the second cover in Wallin’s ‘konceptbok’, this is what was written:

På min graf.

Jordisk Oro Wiker,

För den Frid som varar.

Grafven allt förliker,

Himlen allt förklarar.
