Back in 1960, I took 3 'A' levels at school - in French, German and Geography.
Specialisation started after two years at Merchant Taylors' School back then. After four years three main subjects were concentrated on. These subjects were taken after 6 years at the school.
We hardly ever spoke French or German. Written work and literature were in focus.
The first textbooks were in Gothic script.
No dictionaries or any other form of aid were allowed.
