Stig Dagerman (1923-54): 'Det gamla hotellet i Klara'

Det gamla hotellet i Klara

Väl mött i skuggornas skara!

Sitt ner och spendera ett krus

för det gamla hotellet i Klara,

som blivit till luft och ljus.

Här sjöng några törstiga slarvar,

mens andra bar vinkel och lod.

Men nu flyger måsar och sparvar,

där sängar och flaskor stod.

Här möttes den fjortonde dennes

ett annat år två i en kyss.

Hans första men inte hennes.

Ack, väggarna fälldes nyss.

Och han som var mager om bena,

magrade här några år

och byggde i natten den sena

palatser som än består.

Och han som lämnade livet

en afton med hjälp av ett spjäll

bor ännu, fast det är rivet,

på sitt gamla Klara-hotell.

The old hotel in Klara

Just join us midst shadows that starred there!

Sit down and lash out with a drink

for the grand old hotel down in Klara,

all gone before you could blink.

Here sang many thirsty young skivers

while other made things plumb and square.

But now there are seagulls and sparrows,

the bottles and beds are thin air.

One month on the fourteenth a first kiss

was once shared at a rendezvous

His first but she’d had more practice

Now walls there are none to view.

And him with those legs that were spindly

spindled right here for some years

and built in the small hours the princely

palaces that live on here.

And he who of life was just cheated

by choking on gas with no smell

still lives here, though it’s been deleted,

at his grand old Klara hotel.
