'Voor paarsblauwe avondlucht' - another stunner from Dèr Mouw

met vegen geel en violet bestreken;

een smalle rode wolk, rakende lijn,
ligt stil. ’T lijkt alles kraakfijn porselein,
zo teer - ’k durf nauw’lijks zien, bang dat ’t zal breken.

’Gainst mauve dusk sky, seen from my window pane,
like wispy feathers, with their stems fixed stable,
tall, the elastic plumes, I regard my abeles,
my graceful abeles, noble as their name,

which I can’t say, unless with shy lips straying,
I stroke it; yes, and shame seems to disarm
me almost that, a musical Calame,
my sound-brush lacks all words to try portraying.

The ellipses stand, arched around die-straight stem,
the top is blurred, through bell-jar glass quite slim,
covered with violet and yellow streaking;

a thin band of red cloud, tangental line,
lies still. It looks like fragile porcelain,
so frail – I scarce dare look lest it start breaking.

The word 'abele' is a Dutch loan word in English and refers to the white/silver poplar (populus alba). In English it rhymes with 'table'.
