Moon of returning spring...

Moon of returning spring with aspect so divine

Who on the rushes lay your white feet’s light impress

And spread your tresses’ soft and fluttering caress

Across the shimmered surface of the pond’s faint shine.

Moon, it is you who cause the unseen toads to sing

Beneath wild sorrel brushed by your ivory toe,

Who cause the dew to weep on bluish trellising

Of bowed-down willows and on elders’ tepid show.

Streaking the honeysuckled shadow of your glow,

In your mauve peplos under tree trunks you sit down

And midst the wettened grass and sage’s moistened gown

Incline your face and bathe your forehead here below.

Moon, here you have my heart, a dried-up sprig of fern,

Lost in the denseness of the woods of thick dark shade,

Moon, here you have my heart, an ivy-branch so stern

That’s tightly held against this black wall’s palisade.

Illuminate this heart, this wretch beset by spleen,

Who to this great feast no one ever did invite,

Sad while the dog rose and the maple both delight,

My human heart that thinks instead of turning green.

So your refulgence may appease and pierce it through,

This heart brimful of night, by some god dispossessed,

Moon, as are branches of the beech tree let it too

By your enchantment and serenity be blessed.
