Wim van Til: 'December, verraad'

DECEMBER, VERRAAD

Waar water ijskoud lucht wordt, lucht

weer land; waar taal mijn woorden

verzint tot dit landschap;

waar dagen zich verankeren

in bloed; waar vogels stropen

in manshoge voren,

zijn mijn woorden dun geworden

als batist. Ik eindig in begin,

ik roep mijn tolk; zij keert

haar rug, verstaat mij niet.

Zij staart als ik, dit omgekeerde land,

de lijnen zijn opnieuw gewist.

DECEMBER, BETRAYAL

Where water becomes ice-cold air, air

land once more; where language forges

my words into this landscape;

where days anchor themselves

in blood; where birds poach

in man-high furrow ridges,

my words have become as thin

as batiste. I end in beginning,

I call my interpreter; she turns

her back, does not understand me.

She stares as I do, this reversed land,

the contours once again erased.

Werner Aspenström: 'Nunc stans'

Common red fescue

NUNC STANS

nunc stans,

där dans alltid pågår.

Latin, fritt översatt:

Svävflugor över rödsvingel.

NUNC STANS

The street lamps have taken root in the town.

In the country tree after tree disappears.

They have been exported to Germany.

Or else it’s the darkness.

I fabricate a summer day for an autumn child,

an excursion as in the age of the whitened plimsolls.

Someone’s made a large open sandwich of downland

with cumulus clouds as a topping.

There’s a lake, there are downy birches and black alders

and a four-metre-high juniper bush.

The air offers a nose-prickling fizzy drink.

In short, you are standing at the festive venue,

nunc stans,

where there is always dancing.

Latin, freely translated:

Blowflies over red fescue.

Wesper Aspenström: 'Tierleben'

TIERLEBEN

TIERLEBEN

It is the nosing, it is the breathing,

it is the thin beams of steam.

It is the rabbit’s ever-twitching nose,

it is the field mouse that blows on the dry leaves.

It is cat’s noses, dog’s noses and bird’s beaks.

It is snouts, muzzles, sniffers, snoots, snozzles and trunks.

It is great red wide-open jaws.

It is the air that has no home of its own

and slinks down into our chest cavities

and slinks out again.

It is everything that tickles, nudges, ruffles itself up

or purrs.

It is the nibbling and the pawing.

It is the cuddle-lapping and the snapping.

It is all the animals in Brehm’s fifteen tomes,

especially the warm-blooded mammals.

It is the pleural sacks, the tracheas, the tongues,

the lips, the nostrils, the whiskers.

It is not the sphinx in Giza that guards the temple of the dead.

It is the stealthily sneaking, trudging and leaping lives.

It is the breath-breeders among the world’s cool complexes.

Werner Aspenström: 'Gölen'

GÖLEN

Grå speglar grått.

Finns inte vitt mer,

mitt mer.

Över mig gråfåglar,

gråbukar,

trasiga vingar.

Kring mig makligt gående

sjukfolk, lerfolk,

gipshundar.

Finns inte ny

måne, stjärnor,

finns bara dy.

Resten av ljusfesten

åt grodorna upp.

Finns inte guldkarpar mer,

finns inte gråt.

Vore jag klarögd

skulle jag sörja.

THE POOL

Grey reflects grey.

There’s no more white.

no more mine.

Above me greybirds,

greybellies,

tattered wings.

Around me leisurely walking

sick folk, clay folk,

plaster dogs.

There’s no new

moon, stars,

there’s only sludge.

The remains of the light show

the frogs devoured.

There’s no more golden carp,

no more tears.

I would be clear-eyed

to spend my life grieving.

The last two lines are a clear echo of the first two of a very famous Swedish poem by Lucidor (1638-74). Available in English translation here.

Werner Aspenström: 'Nytagna foton'

NYTAGNA FOTON

Nytagna foton visar nya rynkor.

Trast sjunger rynkfritt i sin tall.

Det är en vatten-stilla kväll

på jorden.

Grundlurad mänsklighet

har jag inte glömt.

Bord dukas fredligt

för ett krig som hårdnar.

Kall måne äter bröd

som andra saknar:

närbilder visar bistra rynkor.

Det är ett vatten, är en trast

som obestridligt sjunger

och är en mänsklighet

som luras grymt.

Enbart veta? Enbart se?

Jag ser det ena, vet det andra

och det blir bara diktad smärta

om det andra.

NEWLY TAKEN PHOTOS

Newly taken photos display new creases.

A thrush sings crease-free in its pine.

It is a water-still evening

on earth.

Utterly duped humanity

I have not forgotten

Tables are calmly being set

for a war that is hardening.

A cold moon eats bread

that others lack:

close-ups display nasty creases.

There is some water, is a thrush

that irrefutably is singing

and there is a humanity

being badly duped.

Just know this? Just see this?

I see the one, know the other

and pain is only fashioned in poems

about the other.

BEFORE THE SUN SETS

Just before the sun sets the trees always quiver,

not from wind, but from love towards each other.

The thrushes sing the death of song.

No one knows how long the night will last.

Israel Kolmodin: 'Then blomstertijd nu kommer' (1695)

THEN BLOMSTERTIJD NU KOMMER

Then blomstertijd nu kommer

Medh lust och fägring stoor/

Nu nalkas liufwe Sommar/

Tå gräs och örter groor.

Then blida Sool vpwärmer

Alt hwad haar warit dödt;

Tå hon oss skrider närmar/

Blijr thet på nyo födt.

The fagra blomsterängiar

Och åkrens ädla sädh/

The grönskand’ örtesängiar

Och alla gröna trädh/

The skola oss påminna

Gudz godhets rikedom:

At wij Gudz nådh besinna/

Som räcker åhret om.

Man hörer foglar siunga

Medh mångahanda liudh;

Skal icke tå wår tunga

Lofsäija HErran Gudh?

Min siäl vphög Gudz ähra

Medh lof och glädiesång/

Som frögda wil och nähra

Oss medh wälgierning mång.

Tu ädle JEsu Christe/

War glädie-Sool och skijn/

Blif hos oss til wårt sidste;

Vpwärm wårt kalla sinn:

Gif kärleks eld i hierta:

Förnya siäl och and:

Wänd bort all sorg och smärta/

Medh tine milda hand.

Tu Sarons blomster skiöna/

Tu Lilja i grön dahl/

Ach! wärdes siälen kröna

Medh dygder til stort tahl:

Tin nådh lät henne fuchta/

Som dagg vthaf Zion;

At hon må liufligt luchta/

Som roos i Libanon.

Wälsigna åhrets gröda/

Och watna tu wårt land:

Gif oss nödtorftig föda;

Wälsigna siö och strand.

Tin fotspor drype af fetma.

Bespisa medh titt Ord/

Och medh thess liufwe sötma/

Oss vppå thenna jord.

THE FLOWERING SEASON'S HERE NOW

The flowering season’s here now

With beauty and great joy/

Delightful summer’s near now

When grass and plants deploy.

The gentle sun’s warmth coaxes

Fresh growth in what’s been dead;

As soon as she approaches/

Reborn life lies ahead.

The meadows’ lovely flowers

And fields of sprouting seeds/

The budding plants in bowers

And all the green-leafed trees/

Should serve to make us wonder

At God’s great goodness here:

On God’s grace then to ponder

Which lasts throughout the year.

We hear birds gladly raising

Their many-throated song;

Shall we then not be praising

Our Lord God too ere long?

My soul, extol God’s splendour

And joyous songs unfold/

That bring delight and tender

Such benefits untold.

Christ Jesus, sun ascending,

Our source of joy and light/

Stay with us till life’s ending;

Our cold minds warm aright:

Renew our soul and spirit:

Our hearts with love’s fire brand:

All pain and grief inhibit/

With thy most gentle hand.

Thou Sharon’s flowers alluring/

Thou lily in green vale/

Ah! crown the soul ensuring

That good deeds there prevail:

Thy mercy shower discreetly/

Like dew of Zion snows;

That it may smell as sweetly/

As Lebanon’s fair rose.

Bless this year’s crop now growing,

And water all our land:

Be daily bread bestowing;

Bless likewise sea and strand.

Thy footsteps drip with richness.

Us nourish with thy word/

And with its wondrous sweetness/

While we have life on earth.

Werner Aspenström: 'Dödgrävarn och en fjäril'

DÖDGRÄVARN OCH EN FJÄRIL

Runtom är sommar med högt gräs

och tumlande skalbaggar.

Maskrosorna puffar sin vita rök

över de flagnande träkorsen.

Dödgrävarn borrar med spaden

sig djupare ner i sanden,

reder granrisbädden åt sin gäst.

Ingenting vet han om sommarens stund.

En fjäril fladdrar förbi

och fladdrar ånyo förbi

i pärlemordräkt.

Sakta reser han sig upp ur grottan,

känner med ens all jordens fägring

och smärta.

THE GRAVE DIGGER AND A BUTTERFLY

All around is summer with tall grass

and tumbling beetles.

The dandelions puff their white smoke

over the peeling wooden crosses.

The grave digger bores his way deeper

into the sand with his spade,

orders the bed of spruce sprays for his guest.

A butterfly flutters past

and flutters past anew

in its mother-of-pearl apparel.

Slowly he gets up from the pit,

suddenly feels all the comeliness of the earth

and its pain.

Werner Aspenström: 'Svindlande landskap'

SVINDLANDE LANDSKAP

slintande knivar

medan det som skulle sägas

ligger outtalat kvar på stranden

som en snäcka?

Alltmera sällan översköljd av havets vågor

men sandens vågor bär oss in mot öknen.

Vad är det som bör sägas?

I vilken färg kan det skildras?

I ingen färg.

Med inga jämförelser. Eftersom

Vilken underlig tystnad.

DIZZYING LANDSCAPE

How are the living to speak to the living?

What words can I utter to you whom I love

other than silence or the glancing knives

of all the questions

while that which was to be said

lies unspoken behind on the shore

like a shell?

Washed over increasingly rarely by the sea’s waves

though the sand’s waves bore us in towards the desert.

What is there that ought to be said?

In what colour can it be portrayed?

In no colour.

With no comparisons. Since

what is settled can never reflect the unreal.

Even the wind would be helpless without waves or trees

or at least a bird

that is flung towards the clouds.

That is the wind’s salvation.

Is there anyone here who sells waves or trees?

What a strange silence.

No one appears on the scene

although the days are passing.

And you my beloved with dark eyes

into what cave can I lead you

here in the dizzying landscape

how are the living to speak to the living?
