Hans Christian Andersen: 'Min lille Fugl, hvor flyver du?'

Min lille Fugl, hvor flyver Du?

Min lille Fugl, hvor flyver Du,

Imellem grønne Grene?

Ak mon jeg rinder Dig i Hu?

Mit Hjerte briste vil itu –!

– O Gud, hvor jeg dog er ene!

Du sagde, at Du var mig god;

Ja, godt mig Alle mene,

Men hvis Du ret min Sorg forstod,

Du kom, Du sang mig Sjæle-Mod,

Da sad jeg ikke alene!

Min lille Fugl, Du kommer ei

Fra dine grønne Grene;

Jeg stille vandre maa min Vei –

Ak, ingen elsker Dig som jeg!

– O Gud, hvor jeg dog er ene!

My little bird, do you fly free?

My little bird, do you fly free

Midst trees of green leaves only?

Ah, do you maybe think of me?

My heart is breaking, come and see–!

– Oh God, I am so lonely!

You said you wished to help my plight;

From all I hear this only,

But if you felt my grief aright

You’d come, and sing my courage bright,

And I’d not sit here lonely!

My little bird, why do you stay

Midst trees of green leaves only;

I silently must onwards stray –

Ah, no one else loves you this way!

– Oh God, I am so lonely!
