VERLAINE
De wereldwijzen zijn de onwijsten,
De onnoozle flinken, die vanzelf
Zich wringen in de krapste lijsten,
Zich krommen onder elk gewelf.
Wat geeft het lot aan de gedweesten,
De dienenden mèt heug en meug?
Een vorm, gebootst op geijkte leesten,
Een muffe bete, een zure teug.
De wereld is een sluw belover,
Een bieder vol arglistigheid;
Maar slaat gij toe - gij houdt niets over:
Gij zijt èn koop èn koopsom kwijt.
Waarom dan ’t hart te laten derven,
Den weg langs naar het eind der reis,
En niet gelijk Verlaine sterven,
Dichter en dronken, vuil en wijs?
VERLAINE
The worldly wise are the unwisest,
The mindless nodders to a fault
Who choose fixed frameworks that squeeze tightest,
Who crouch beneath each low-arched vault.
What does fate grant to those most docile,
Who meekly serve but fail to think?
A tried and tested tidy stockpile
Of musty, dusty food and drink.
The world is such a sly promisor,
Its offers full of low deceit;
Should you accept without provisos,
You’ll lose both purchase and receipt.
Why let the heart then choose privation,
Along the path to where death lies,
And not Verlaine-like meet cessation
Poet and drunk, begrimed and wise?
