Et que son pas raidi recouvre la sandale;

Avec des fleurs aux doigts, respecte son mystère;

Believe me…

Believe me, do not try to look life in the face,

But in the noonday sun or nights when stars regale,

And silently, when you should see her pass with grace,

To know her as she is, don’t draw aside her veil.

Lift back her gown to hide her shoulder well from view

Let her stiff footsteps by her sandal be erased;

So that she ever may remain unknown to you,

Make sure her heavy opal headband is replaced.

And if at times she feels familiar, and should she

Sit down beside you, be more gentle and less wild

With flowers in her hands, respect her mystery;

If she would speak, restrain her, do not be beguiled.

Many have died from grasping what her language means –

And have one moonlit night, temptation being rife,

From curiosity drawn back the veil that screens –

For the art of living is ignorance of life.
