Marie Dauguet: 'Aquarelle'

Aquarelle

Dans la douceur des étangs lents,

Dans la torpeur morne des joncs,

Passent avec des cris dolents

Les cigognes et les hérons.

Leur vol monotonement bouge,

S’élevant des marais sauvages,

Et traverse la lune rouge

De son fantastique sillage.

Sur l’ombre tépide qui dort

Figée à l’abri des roseaux,

Comme pour y pêcher la Mort,

La lune a tendu son réseau,

A tendu son sanglant réseau

Pour y pêcher la Mort qui bouge

Et dresse sur le disque rouge

Sa forme parmi les roseaux.

Watercolour

In the soft ponds’ gentle calmness,

In rushes’ dismal lethargy,

With doleful cries there now progress

Herons and storks repeatedly.

Their flight monotonously moves

Skywards up from the pristine marsh,

And traces its fantastic grooves

Across the red moon in its path.

On the warm shadow fast asleep

Fixed to the shelter of the reeds,

As if it Death now sought to reap,

The moon hangs nets above the weeds.

The moon has spread above the weeds

Its bleeding nets to fish for Death

And on the red disc it has etched

Its tattered form among the reeds.
