THE FROG
To seek out secluded places
in the landscape or in the soul
is just as treacherous
as the Chinese scholars
who believed they knew the path of Tao.
It leads to petulance
to the idea of the emperor’s worth
and finally to arrogance.
It is better then to listen to thunder
and see lightning flashes that so swiftly can ruin
an entire life.
I favour the magpie
just as the wondering mice before the trap
but mostly the frog
she who simply stares and stares
she in the lowest calling
who for a short while croaks to the moon
before the paths take her life.
