Ida Gerhardt: 'De apocalyptische ezel'

Landscape with Ass between two Sheep - Karel Dujardin (1622-78)

De apocalyptische ezel

quidquid latet apparebit

Midden in een landschap zonder eind,

aan een verrafeld touw gelijnd

balkt hij. Het was mij nooit verteld

dat dit bestond in zijn geweld.

De klank verscheurt mij hart en oren.

O God, het is een alpenhoren,

’t paard Honger uit de Openbaring,

de diepe oerkreet van de paring.

Dan – tanden bloot – een tubastoot:

een schetteren, mirum spargens sonum,

dat heel de hemel ervan splijt,

het ‘per sepulcra regionum’

dat mij tot in het merg doorsnijdt.

Dat bokken van de schapen scheidt.

The apocalyptic ass

quidquid latet apparebit

Bound to a rope with fraying strands,

in endless landscape there it stands

and brays. I never had been told

that such great violence could unfold.

Its sound my heart and ears has shorn.

O God, it is an alpine horn,

the Famine Horse of Revelation,

the primal scream of procreation.

Then – with teeth bared – a trumpet’s blare:

a shattering mirum spargens sonum

that rents the heavens with its tone,

the per sepulcra regionum

that pierces through me to the bone.

That goat from sheep divides alone.

quidquid latet apparebit

whatever is hidden will be revealed

mirum spargens sonum per sepulcra regionum

The trumpet scattering its sound throughout earth’s sepulchres

(from the text of the Requiem)q
