Ida Gerhardt: 'Het egeltje'

Even, als in verstaan,

zien twee bevredigden elkander aan.

The little squirrel

The squirrel always comes with shuffling tread

at dusk across the paved floor of the shed.

The sniffing nostrils of its pointed snout

over the cold stone tiles move in and out

around the silent one whose patience lifts

its shyness and who fills the earthen dish

and waits until a tiny hand, rough-skinned,

grasps tentatively at the dish’s rim.

And then it drinks. Briefly, as if minds meet,

the two, both satisfied, observe and greet.
